Welcome back to the Choose a Song Jam! Make anything inspired by the music you like during the jam submission period!

THEME

This jam doesn't have a theme. What it has is a requirement: Your creation MUST be inspired by a song you like: be it clearly, loosely or something inbetween.

This song cannot be a song made by yourself, but aside from that, go ham.

WHAT CAN I MAKE?

Pretty much anything (medium-wise), really! You can make videogames, zines, TTRPGs/physical games, comics, written stories, asset packs... even a new song by itself!

In case of making music, be sure to NOT plagiarize the original song or use samples that you do not own the rights to use.

Also! You CANNOT make game mods/romhacks for this.

OTHER RULES

  1. This is an unranked jam, which means there is no voting and no prizes. There’s also a lot of time for you to do your project (and if you need an extension, don’t hesitate to tell us!).
  2. ABSOLUTELY NO genAI use is permitted. If you need help with something like writing/design/art/etc, we suggest collaborating with another participant or forming a team. Using AI for this (including using an AI-made song as inspiration) will get your entry disqualified and removed from the jam.
  3. No bigoted content. This means no racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or any other kind of content that promotes bigotry.
  4.  Following the previous rule, be respectful and mindful of others in and outside the game jam.
  5. No NSFW content (sorry!). Sensitive topics such as mild blood/violence or common horror themes are okay as long as they have its respective content warning somewhere in both the game’s content and itch page.
  6. Make your submission free, pay-what-you-want or priced. Though if you do charge for it, please send us a copy (such as a key, which you can generate on your entry's page) or give enough community copies so we can check that your game doesn’t break any rules.
  7. Feel free to submit your stuff for this jam to other jams that allow it, but if we suspect you’re just spamming unrelated submissions we may remove/disqualify your game from here.
  8. Have fun! And thank you for reading the jam’s rules <3

TOOLS AND ENGINES

Here's a list of some free/PWYW tools that you can use for your creation! You definitely can use something else for your jam entry, these are just suggestions!

FOR DIGITAL/VIDEO GAMES

Narrat, an engine to make narrative RPGs with.

Ren'Py, an engine to make (mostly) visual novels with.

Twine, an engine to write IF/Interactive Fiction with.

Ink/Inky, an engine to write IF/Interactive Fiction with, too.

Bapalon, an engine for making SOUP-likes (games where you explore various rooms with limited interaction).

GB Studio, an engine to make all sorts of games, mostly designed to be compatible with the Game Boy console itself.

Bitsy, an engine to make "little games" with.

OTHER TOOLS

Decker, an engine to make all sorts of tools, zines, games and other things with.

BeepBox, a relatively simple tool to make music with. You could use the UltraBox mod if you prefer, either way.

Electric Zine Maker, a tool for making zines digitally. (TW for heavy eyestrain/flashing lights here)

And finally, here's a really great list of setting-agnostic systems and SRDs to start making TTRPGs by TheGiftOfGabes.
